Creations stories are important in basically every religion, and for every way of understanding the world as it is - astrophysicists and cosmologists wouldn’t be spending so much time trying to go ever further back in understanding how the universe started if that weren’t the case. Remixing and reimagining creation stories play a significant part in Western culture, at least: when someone pointed out to me that John Milton’s Paradise Lost can be understood as Genesis fanfiction I had to sit down for a moment. All of which is to say: Tobias Carroll’s essay about variations on Genesis - which does start with Milton - is a very fun read.
